Come Learn About Surface Pattern Design
Hi there, my creative friend! I’m so excited to be back in full swing and January is always a very fun month in #annesuniverse. Why you might ask?
January is the start of a new year. It’s a time to reflect on your accomplishments from 2023 and a time to get excited about what’s to come. I always love January because I look for new things to learn, new opportunities, and since I focus on the Surface Pattern Design industry, it’s the perfect topic to talk about.
Many of you have heard the story of how I re-invented myself in my late fifties when I discovered Surface Pattern Design. Prior to that, I had a long successful career in fashion retail. I was a top-performing Vice President at a global fashion company. I’d been there for 15 years when I was suddenly laid off.
At the time, my mom said to me “when one door closes, another one opens,” and she was so right! It took a while, but eventually, I gave up trying to find another corporate job and decided to lean into my creativity and become - gasp - an entrepreneur! I dove into Surface Pattern Design and have never looked back. Being my own boss is the most empowering feeling in the world. And Surface Pattern Design offers location freedom, time freedom and money freedom.
Regardless of where you are on your creative journey, keep reading because you may fall in love with Surface Pattern Design too!
Surface Pattern Design has existed for centuries, even before Japanese Shibori Textile Design in the 8th century. With the advent of computers, the industry has exploded and created incredible opportunities for people like you and me.
Surface Pattern Design offers huge benefits including:
#1 – Location freedom.
What does this mean? Take Maggie Smith, one of my students, who learned Surface Pattern Design so that she could create art inspired by her Native American heritage. She designs blankets and other products and has been able to keep designing even when moving back and forth between Hawaii and the U.S. mainland. This is possible because all you need is your computer, some paper, pens, and pencils if you want to draw by hand, and a computer program called Adobe Illustrator.
I travel to Paris every year and take my supplies with me. I can run my entire business from there just so long as my hotel, or a local co-working space has fast internet. As long as you have these simple and very portable tools, you can create beautiful designs from anywhere in the world. This is the amazing location freedom that you get with Surface Pattern Design.
#2 – Time freedom.
Another one of my students, Jane Foster, is able to carve out the amount of time she wants to dedicate to her Surface Pattern Design work. She’s busy teaching sewing classes three times a week in her studio in Northern California. During Covid, she joined my programs to learn something new. I bet you’re a life long learner too and love to expand your skills. Since Jane teaches sewing and has loved to sew herself since she was 6 years old, it made perfect sense for her to learn how to put her own designs on fabric to sell to her students.
She also loves to wear gorgeous blouses and tops that are made from her fabrics. She learned how to create her first repeating patterns in my From Doodles to Dollars® Coaching Week program. Even if you have a full-time job or other obligations - and who doesn’t - you can still explore the opportunities in Surface Pattern Design. You get to decide how much time you want to put into creating your art, illustrations, and repeating patterns.
#3 – Financial freedom.
I don’t know about you but having a bit more money coming in to fund vacation trips, home repairs, or other projects is very welcome. Maria Ahl-Zanier joined my world and already had a thriving creative business. However, she really wanted to learn how to translate her large scale watercolor art into repeating patterns so that she could launch a line of linen dresses. She took Doodles to learn how because her efforts with Photoshop weren’t giving her the results she wanted.
As a Surface Pattern Designer, you get to decide if this creative pursuit is a hobby, a side-gig, or a full or part-time career. Are you excited? Join my Doodles Coaching Week which starts tomorrow! Don’t delay. Click HERE to sign up and I’ll get you settled in before the first lesson on Wednesday.
The Coaching Week runs from January 17 through January 25 and if you want to go even deeper with me, I’ll be opening enrollment to my 6-week signature program, The Pattern Design Academy®, when Doodles wraps up.
See you in Doodles!
xo,
Anne

Hi…I’m Anne!
My creative inspiration comes from a lifetime of observation. I grew up in Paris on the Place St. Sulpice and walked to school through the Luxembourg gardens. And that was only the beginning… Learn more by watching the video on my About page.
